The Pagodas of Japan, by James
Mizelle Smith
**Photos
by James Mizelle Smith which include pagodas**
One of the most striking features
of the Far East are the Pagodas. There are thousands. WEBSTER'S DEFINITION
OF PAGODA:
"in India and the far east, a temple in the form of a pyramidal tower of
several stories, usually an odd number, commonly built over a sacred
relic or a work of devotion." This definition seems to hold true for
China and the Far East, at least originally when they began in India used
by the Buddhists but the use of the pagoda seems to have broadened to include
many more uses for pagodas other than tombs. They can be used as watchtowers
for enemies, places of worship, gateways, or simply as ornament. This is
a small collection of 1952 / 55 slides taken by my father.
