An Eye-Opening Experience
On July 20, 1969 I visited The Temple of the East Beneath the Clouds at Weaverville, California and it was an unforgettable and eye-opening experience.

I have to hang my head in shame at how some of my fellow Americans have been so closed minded, hypocritical, and crewel to "outsiders," people that are different and immigrants who came to this country after them. The history of hardships and mistreatments to the Chinese American immigrants are well documented at the Joss House as they are at other numerous historical localities and in print and on web sites all over the internet. Shame, shame, shame, Americans.

An Enchanting Experience
On the brighter side, my visit to the oldest constantly operating Chinese Temple in California; it offered insight to the great beauty, depth, and wisdom offered by Chinese thought, religion, and art.

A Treasure of Chinese Artifacts
A "must see," for museum lovers, the Temple is full of Chinese religious antiquities and other artifacts from California's gold rush days.

Temple Door

Last rebuilt in 1874 after being destroyed by fires this Chinese Taoist Temple offered a place for the Chinese American immigrants to congregate.

The Chinese miners of early days were relatively well treated in Weaverville because their taxation stuffed the city's coffers.

Opium Pipe

Some Chinese have appreciated states of altered consciousness since early days.

More Temple Information and Resoruces.
Because of changing political and social climates many Taoist Temples and artifacts have been destroyed even in China itself, the birthplace of Taoism. Luckily this Temple has been fully preserved as it was over a hundred years ago. Although as part of the California State Parks System since 1956 some improvements have been made to the surrounding grounds such as a parking lot, pond and a visitor center.

Tours are offered during the tourist season. For more information contact the Joss House State Historical Park: (530) 623-5284.

The state also has a nice Quick Time movie online and an informative web site.
